After a brief<br \/>\n      presentation of experimental findings obtained in Saclay at the<br \/>\n      turn of the century, supporting a distinction between an upper<br \/>\n      transitional range with oblique bands and a lower transitional<br \/>\n      range with decaying spots, a brief review of the numerical<br \/>\n      approaches taken up to now will be given, with special emphasis<br \/>\n      on the &#8216;temporal \/ spatiotemporal&#8217; issue. In order to reach<br \/>\n      large aspect ratios, a modelling strategy having recourse to a<br \/>\n      drastic lowering of the cross-stream resolution has been developed.<br \/>\n      A first semianalytical approach [1] points to an interpretation<br \/>\n      in terms of spatiotemporal intermittency [2] proposed by Pomeau<br \/>\n      but fails to reproduce the bands, which is not the case of the<br \/>\n      under-resolved direct numerical simulations that we have performed<br \/>\n      using Gibson&#8217;s ChannelFlow program. These simulations faithfully<br \/>\n      reproduce experimental findings up to a measurable shift of the<br \/>\n      transitional range [3], which shows that the formation of bands<br \/>\n      is a robust phenomenon involving gross features of the turbulent<br \/>\n      flow only.<\/p>\n<p>      [1] M.
