The convection<br \/>\nproblem is self-adjoint and the<br \/>\nlinear convective stability is characterized by l, the degree of a<br \/>\nspherical harmonics Y_l^m(theta,phi). While the radial<br \/>\nstructure of the linear convection is determined by the stability<br \/>\nanalysis, there exists a (2l+1)-fold degeneracy<br \/>\nin the horizonal structure of the spherical convection. When l=O(10),<br \/>\ni.e., in a moderately thin spherical shell,<br \/>\nthe removal or partial removal of the degeneracy represents a<br \/>\nmathematically difficult, physically not wellunderstood<br \/>\nproblem.
