講演題目: Applications of Partial Differential Equations in Physiology

講演要旨:
Physiology and pathophysiology provide a rich arena for mathematical
modelling that often requires continuum formulations, and thus partial
differential equations, due the length and timescales under onsideration.
We consider two examples. In the first, we explore the transport of
oxygen in skeletal and cardiac muscle. This requires the study of
reaction diffusion equations within complicated geometries, with the
aim of refining indices of functional capillary supply from tissue
cross sections to assist in identifying ne-scale muscle
microvascular pathologies. As a second example, we consider Marx’s
line: this is the epithelium immediately underneath the contact line
formed by the ocular tear film and the eyelid which exhibits
characteristics of cellular damage even in the healthy eye. We
highlight that the determination of the fluid flow in the tear
film meniscus adjacent to Marx’s line requires The Navier-Stokes
equations rather than lubrication theory and illustrate how
modelling the tear film informs our understanding of the potential
role of hyperosmotic stress in the aetiology of Marx’s line
and “dry eye” irritation.
