_/ 題 目: Title: Chaos and Intermittency in the Sun-Earth Complex System
_/
_/ 内 容 :
_/ Sun-Earth system is a complex, electrodynamically coupled system
_/ dominated by nonlinear interactions. The complex behaviors of the
_/ solar-terrestrial environment, e.g., the phenomena of solar flares and
_/ geomagnetic storms, are an indication that it is in a state
_/ far-from-equilibrium whereby instabilities, nonlinear waves, and
_/ turbulence play key roles in the system dynamics. One of the
_/ ubiquitous features of the solar-terrestrial environment is the
_/ occurrence of intermittency and chaos in the solar dynamo, solar
_/ corona, solar wind, and terrestrial
_/ magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere. The characterization of the
_/ chaotic and intermittent nature of the sun-Earth system is essential
_/ for efficient monitoring and forecasting of space weather and space
_/ climate, as well as global climate change. In this talk, we show that
_/ the dynamical systems approach is capable of elucidating the origin of
_/ the intermittent dynamics in the solar-terrestrial environment. Two
_/ partial differential equations are considered: the
_/ Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and the regularized long-wave equation,
_/ which govern the nonlinear evolution of Alfven waves and drift waves
_/ in plasmas, respectively. We demonstrate that a chaotic attractor in
_/ space plasmas and fluids is composed of chaotic saddles and unstable
_/ periodic orbits, and explain the links between theses unstable
_/ structures and spatiotemporal intermittency.
